Claude unified interface merges Chat and Cowork

The Claude unified interface marks a major shift in how Anthropic's AI assistants are used. By removing the need to pick between Chat and Cowork, the platform now decides the optimal execution path based on the user's stated goal.

Claude unified interface Overview

On 16 September 2026 (Ngày 16/9/2026), Anthropic began merging Claude Chat and Claude Cowork into a single interface. The change eliminates the previous step where users had to select either a conversational mode or a multi-step workflow before starting any task. Instead, a single request is enough for Claude to determine whether a quick answer or a complex, multi-phase operation is required.

Pre-merge workflow separation

Before the integration, users were forced to choose Chat for simple Q&A and Cowork for multi-step activities such as file processing, research, and document generation. This split created a friction point: when a conversation evolved into a longer workflow, the user had to switch to Cowork, and the conversational context was not always transferred correctly.

Post-merge unified experience

After the merge, the interface no longer asks the user to specify a mode. A straightforward request receives an immediate answer, while a more involved request triggers Claude to read files, run code, use connectors, draft documents, and even build slide decks-all within the same chat window. The user simply describes the desired outcome; Claude decides whether to act as a chat assistant, a research engine, a workflow orchestrator, or an autonomous agent.

Cloud execution model and data access limits

Claude Cowork's cloud mode now lets tasks continue after the user's computer is turned off, supports scheduled runs, and can be accessed from web, desktop, or mobile clients. However, cloud execution does not guarantee access to local files. Claude can read or write a local file only when three conditions are met: 1. The session originates from Claude Desktop. 2. The user has granted folder permissions. 3. Claude Desktop remains running at the moment of file access. If Claude Desktop is closed, the cloud session proceeds but loses any ability to touch local files. Projects that rely on local directories therefore still require Claude Desktop to stay active.

Managing data governance for cloud tasks

Running workloads in the cloud raises stricter data-governance requirements. Beyond folder permissions, organizations must define:

  • Which data sets are permitted for cloud processing.
  • Which data must remain on-premise.
  • These rules apply to customer documents, personal data, transaction information, and internal files. Proper classification helps avoid accidental exposure of sensitive assets when tasks are offloaded to the cloud.

Workflow categories and practical implications

Two distinct workflow categories emerge: Type 1 – Local-dependent workflows – Examples include reading a code repository, opening a contract folder, or scanning a set of on-premise records. The computer and Claude Desktop must stay operational for the entire duration of the task. Type 2 – Cloud-independent workflows – These run entirely in the cloud when the input data already resides there or is reachable via a cloud-compatible connector. For instance, if the input data is stored on a cloud bucket or accessed through an API connector, the research or generation task can run for many hours without any local machine. If all required data lives in the cloud, the research phase may continue for extended periods. Conversely, if a workflow needs to pull additional files from a laptop while it is running, the laptop cannot be shut down; otherwise Claude loses access to those files.

Strategic implications for AI product design

The unification demonstrates that future AI products will be judged not only on model quality but also on their ability to:

  • Choose the correct execution path.
  • Access the appropriate data sources.
  • Invoke the right tools and connectors.
  • Preserve conversational context.
  • Enforce granular access permissions.
  • Deliver the final artifact without forcing users to copy results into separate applications.
  • Chat remains, but it is no longer just a conversational window; it is the primary entry point for a fully orchestrated AI system.

Conclusion

The Claude unified interface simplifies user interaction, expands cloud capabilities, and forces organizations to rethink data-governance policies. By handling mode selection internally and supporting both local-dependent and cloud-independent workflows, Anthropic sets a new benchmark for integrated AI assistants.
